the best times to kitesurf
3 locations on the island

January – April @
Mac’s bay resort

Location

The best place to learn kitesurfing and wingfoiling on Koh Phangan is at our main kitespot in the famous Mac’s Bay resort on the south coast of the island of Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand. To get there, just drive direction Haadrin and you will see a big roadsign 500 meter after the traffic light in Ban tai. Turn right here and follow the Kiteflip signs.

Spot

This kitespot is one of the best for kitesurfing and wingfoiling on Koh Phangan due to its huge, flat, waist-deep water lagoon and big sandy beach area. It’s ideal for beginners and intermediate riders to progress their level. Here we have the biggest landing and launching area of Koh Phangan. The beach is made out of soft white sand and is cleaned every day. Our kiteschool is the only one in a few kilometer radius so you will have the whole place for yourself.

Wind & weather

From January till April we get stable south-east wind for most of the days. The average windspeed is between 10 and 18 knots. This is an ideal windspeed for kitesurfing and wingfoiling. The best months are Feb and March. During this season there is no rain at all and an average temperature of 25-30 degrees. You can easily kitesurf in your boardshorts or bikini. No need for a wetsuit.

June – September @
Phangan bungalows

Location

During the summer months the wind turns and comes from the west. This is the time we move to our summer location on the west coast of the island in Phangan Bungalows. It’s only 1 minute from Tongsala center and in a very central location on the island. Drive from Tongsala onto the west coastal road and you will see the Kiteflip signs.

Spot

This spot is a perfect for beginners to learn kitesurfing because of the shallow flat water and side on-shore winds. We are the only school in this small bay so you will have to whole spot for yourself. There is a peninsula from where you can start kitesurfing and it makes a great place to stand and take pictures from.

Facilities

  • Kite storage
  • Shady relax area
  • Showers and toilet
  • Restaurant/bar
  • Wifi
  • Parking

Wind & weather

From June till September we get monsoon winds. This means less consistent compared to our high season but more stronger. Windspeeds can vary from 10 till 25 knots. We do get the occasional rain shower but these are usually short. We don’t have wind everyday all day so its best to always check the forecast or contact us. July and august are usually the best months for kitesurfing on Koh Phangan during summer season.

November – December @
Chaloklum

Location

During November and December the wind comes from the North and we teach in Chaloklum in the North of the island. We have a pop-up spot here where we meet with our customers.

Spot

This kitespot is a flat water bay with sandy bottom and is shared with all the other kite schools on the island so the space is limited. It is also fairly tide dependent. During low tide its ideal for kitesurf lessons. During hightide its good for kite foiling and wing foiling.

Facilities

  • temporary storage room for our equipment
  • toilet
  • Restaurant/bar

Wind & weather

This time of the year it’s still monsoon season which means we do get the regular rain storm but this can also bring sometimes nice winds. They vary from 10 to 20 knots and the direction is from the north. This is also the coldest period of the year so we provide neoprene clothing for our students to stay nicely warm in the water.

Accommodation

Chaloklum is a small fisherman village which is very quiet. Its also pretty far from the more lively area’s on the island (20-40min drive). But in case you would like to stay very close to the kitespot there are a hand full of nice hotels in Chaloklum which you can find easily on booking.com. Just know that December is the busiest time of the year so be sure to book beforehand.

We usually recommend our customers to book something on the west coast of the island cause here you will be closer to all the nice restaurants and things to do plus you can enjoy beautiful sunsets. Check out following areas: Haad yao west, Salad beach and Shritanu  beach.

How to get to
Koh Phangan?

The slower but cheap way

Option 1

Take the night bus from Bangkok to Koh Phangan. You can find different companies offering this route. The best way is to ask in your hotel in Bangkok and the staff will probably be able to arrange it for you. Most buses leave around 7-8 p.m. from Kao san road and you will arrive around 11.30 a.m. on Koh Phangan. The price is around 1400 baht.

Option 2

Take a flight from Don Muang airport in Bangkok to Surathani Airport. You can choose between different airline companies like Airasia, Nok air or Thai lion air. A flight takes one hour. The price is around 1000-1200 baht. Book in advance to get a cheap rate. Once you have arrived in Surathani, you can take a bus from the airport to Donsak pier which takes about two hours. After that, it’s 2,5 hours ferry till Koh Phangan. Usually you can buy a join ticket at the airport (bus and ferry combined) for 400 baht. Make sure you arrive latest in Surathani at 4 p.m. because the last ferry leaves around 6 p.m. in Donsak.

The faster but more expensive way

If you don’t want to miss any of your precious time kitesurfing on Koh Phangan, it’s best to get here the fast way. This means to take a plane from Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok to Koh Samui (the neighbouring island of Koh Phangan). The two airlines that fly this route are Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways. The flight takes an hour and costs around 4000-5000 baht. Again, the more in advance you book the better the price.

Once arrived in Koh Samui, you  take the ferry to Koh Phangan. You can book a taxi in Samui airport to the correct pier since there are a few different locations the ferry’s leave from. For the exact time schedule off all the ferry companies please click here

**Please note that timetables will vary according to the tourist seasons**
